Through their research, Henry
Steel Olcott and Helena
Blavatsky concluded that
Buddhism best embodied elements
of what they found significant
in all religions. Olcott
utilized Western scientific
reasoning in his synthesis and
presentation of Buddhism. The
interrelationship he saw between
Buddhism and Science paralleled
his Theosophical approach to
show the scientific bases for
supernatural phenomena such as
auras, hypnosis, and Buddhist
“miracles.”
Some admirers regarded Olcott to
be a bodhisattva, a Christ-like
figure, reincarnated from the
Third Century. Many throughout
southern Asia considered him a
reformer of Buddhism and
additionally saw him as a
prominent figure in the history
of Ceylon, today’s Sri Lanka,
where he spent considerable
time.
However, in Europe and America,
the more influential of these
two is Helena Blavatsky, through
two voluminous but highly
influential books - Isis
Unveiled (1877) and The Secret
Doctrine (1888). Although
erratically penned, they remain
significant in esoteric circles
even today, despite their
negative impact in the 1920’s
and 30's. Like Mayan enthusiasts
who downplay the most notorious
characteristic of the Mayan
religion - human sacrifice - New
Age authors seldom acknowledge
the horrific heritage of
Theosophy contributing as it did
to German National Socialism,
aka Nazism and Adolf Hitler
and the Occult.
Helena Blavatsky writings were
thinly disguised anti-Semitism.
She proclaimed the superiority
of the Aryan race, the fifth
“root race” of seven supposed
races. Furthermore, as if she
hadn’t already gone too far, she
insisted the Aryans descended
from the survivors of Atlantis,
destroyed 850,000 years ago.
Yes, that's correct, 850,000
years ago. Quite a different
timeline from what Plato offered
and what alternative historians
propound today (12,000 years
ago). Helena Blavatsky indicated
that the Jewish race was from
“inferior stock” - an offshoot
of the Aryan race. According to
her, there are many modern
non-Aryan peoples inferior to
the Aryans. Frequently, she
contrasts Aryan with Semitic
culture (denigrating the
latter), contending (hat Semitic
races have become ’'degenerate
in spirituality and perfected in
material.
